Alpha Cigar Absinthe Infused Maduro -

Belicoso 6.2 x 50

I am unsure of this type of blend as I am not a fan of infused cigars.  Often I feel they come off as artificial and overdone but being a very different type of infusion, I am excited to see what this cigar can bring to the table.

Look and Feel:

Nice looking maduro wrapper on this belicoso with a slight box press to it.  The wrapper has a nice silky sheen to it with minimal veins and the seams are tight.  There is a couple of tiny spots on the wrapper but it doesn't look like it will create an issue with the experience.  The pack is pretty tight and is consistent throughout.  The pre-light draw has a perfect resistance and you get notes of black licorice and herbs.  Can't wait to light this up!

Foot Third:

At first light you a nice blend of herbs, earth, sweetness, and hints of black licorice.  Even though this is an infused cigar it tastes very natural.  Through the nose I get a very smooth vegital sweet note and more hints of the licorice.  The finish provides a light blend of black pepper and nutmeg mixed with that earth and vegital sweet flavor.  The ash holds very well and the smoke is full and silky and smells very good.  Later in this third the finish and retrohale provides herbs mixed with that anise herb/black licorice.  Cinnamon adds in the finish late in the first third and the blend of this cigar is very well blended and balanced.  Amazing first third!

Body Third:

In this third a lot of the core flavors are the same.  The spices have dialed back a bit but the sweetness kicks up a little.  In no way is this sweetness an artificial flavor, tastes totally natural and well blended.  The body is medium full and the strength in nicotine is mild.  The black licorice notes also pulled back a little making this another amazing third.  The finish is clean and moderate in length...very well done!

Head Third:
At the start of this third the black licorice flavor started to come back a little with a build up of darker earthy flavors.  The sweetness pulled back and through the nose the spice kicked up a good bit.  More white pepper and cinnamon with that anise flavor.  Woody notes came in during this third, similar to campfire in aroma and woody in flavor.  Smoke was plentiful and smooth, construction is great, the blend is still well done, and the ash continues to hold very well.  The herbal notes have also built throughout this third and it is enjoyable...maybe not as much as the first two thirds though.

Summary:

This cigar really surprised me that I would like it that much.  If you are not a fan of infused cigars, try this one and you may change your opinion!  (NO JOKE)  This cigar did step back a little in the last third but not in an unpleasant way, just not as good as the first two thirds.  The flavors of black licorice (muted though), herbs, vegital sweetness, earth, cinnamon, nutmeg, slight black pepper, and woody notes are the main flavors.  The flavor, blending and construction is so good I think it is a box worthy cigar!  Great job Alpha!

The Alpha Cigar Company is a maker that infuses and barrel ages their cigars and does it very well.  So many are overpowering and artificial, not here.  Their cigars blend the infusion with the natural flavors so well it is hard to tell it is infused.  Gotta try these out so be sure to look for them and check out their site!

Alpha Defuser in Maduro - Robusto - 5.0 x 50

This is the non-infused cigar line from Alpha wrapped in a San Andreas maduro leaf.  The filler provides a Cuban seed Piloto Cubano with an Olor Dominicano binder.  Usually I have had the Alpha cigars that are lightly infused with absinthe so I’m looking forward to testing out the Defuser!

Look and Feel:

Nice looking robusto with a dark chocolate San Andreas wrapper with a very neat and tight triple cap.  The seams are tight and the wrapper is pretty toothy with a slight grit to the feel but with nice oils on the surface.  The aroma is a dark cocoa with a slight hint of dark earth and black coffee…  Prelight provides a dark earth with hints of cocoa notes with a great draw.

Foot Third:

First light, you get a nice toasted bread note with earth and cocoa in the background.  The cigar burns well and smokes very a lot right off the bat.  The draw flavors move to earth, cocoa, and hints of black coffee with a slightly spiced tobacco finish.  Through the nose I get a mixed herbal note accompanied by floral notes and some vegetal flavored cream.  Some white pepper with a slight red pepper tingle on the finish.  (wow)  Hints of mint and with a sweet vanilla note mixes in to help keep the balance from being too herbal.  This is a full body cigar (in flavor) with a medium strength in regards to nicotine.

Body Third:

The second third has pulled back in body just a little.  I would say it has moved to medium via the mouth draw and medium-full through the nose.  The herbal/floral notes are the binding flavors with a medium earth and black pepper mixed in.  The finish is more of a slightly sweet earth with hints of espresso and black pepper. You still get those hints of a vanilla sweetness from time to time.   It is still a very good cigar during this third just slightly less complex.

Head Third:
The head third of this cigar moved a little stronger towards earth with some espresso notes being a little more present.  The herbal and floral notes are still there but blended more with the stronger earth.  The sweetness is nearly gone at this point and a mix of black pepper, white pepper, and paprika have taken over for the sweetness.  Through the nose is the only place you find that floral sweetness so I find myself pushing some smoke through the nose most of the time.  Body is medium and the strength is mild at this point.  The finish is mainly the earth and light black pepper and paprika.  In general this third was a good performer but not much complexity and not much transition.

Summary:

This cigar performed very well and it is hard to expect anything less from Alpha Cigar.  This is a non-infused cigar, which many that they make are absinthe infused cigars, but this one performed great without any “help”!  The first third was Amazing!  The last third was not up to par with the first two but was always pleasant.  The construction was good but if I were to nitpick, the ash was a little flaky at times.  If you like a complex cigar with floral, herbal, earth, espresso, and mixed spices while getting a natural sweetness this is the cigar for you!  Great job again by the Alpha team.
