Rocky Patel Velvet Edition – Toro 6.0 X 52

I have enjoyed a Rocky Patel cigar over the years and always like to try new cigars.  Sometimes it can be overwhelming to pick a Rocky cigar because there are so many but a sampler like this makes it easy to try different Rocky cigars.  Looking forward to this affordable Rocky Patel blend.

Look and Feel:

This cigar is wrapped in a Connecticut wrapper with a nice light brown color.  The seams are tight and with minimal veins topped with a well applied triple cap.  The feel is smooth to the touch (doesn't look very oily) and is packed pretty tight.  The pre-light draw is very open and provides a woody note with a defined salt flavor.  I'm very interested to see how this cigar tastes after that interesting pre-light.

Foot Third:

The opening is a generic sweetness but medium to mild in body with hints of cinnamon.  The smell of the smoke is very sweet and pleasant.  The flavor became a tad bitter with hay and cinnamon with a fairly clean finish.  Quickly the flavors moved to a chili pepper and even onion through the nose.  Then towards the end of this third cream flavors mixed with rose pedals.  A ton of transition so far in this cigar and I have to say I'm loving it.  The body is medium and the burn has be straight and the cigar holds ash well.

Body Third:

My middle third provided a very interesting flavor, smoked pork!  Mixed with that pork you noted a nice hickory flavor and mild spice on the finish.  The next transition moved to a cream and sweet spice mixture of nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt.  Then the binding flavor became a bell pepper mixed with those sweet spices.  The body is medium and the finish is long but with a clean finish.  Very interesting blend and you do not typically get this type of variety of flavors...awesome!

Head Third:
This cigar really mixes it up!  The sweet cinnamon pulled back during this third and the body pulled back to a mild-medium body and really smoothed out.  The flavors moved to a mahogany mixed with herbs, rosemary being the major flavor.  You occasionally taste hints of kale offering a unique note to this cigar.  The finish became shorter throughout this third but still very clean.

Summary:

The Rocky Patel Velvet Edition is very complex for a budget cigar.  The journey that this cigar takes you on is one of a fantastic meal.  Imagine a cigar offering flavors of smoked pork, hay, cinnamon, nutmeg, cream, bell peppers, rose pedals, wood, and rosemary...wow!  The body is medium overall and the strength of this cigar is mild.  If you are looking for a great complex cigar without a nicotine hit and at a fantastic price this Rocky Patel Velvet Edition is well worth it.  Thanks to Holt's for providing this cigar for review.  Be sure to check out their Rocky Patel Luxury Collectionwhich provides a great deal on 5 very good Rocky cigars.

Rocky Patel is one of the worlds most popular cigar lines and offers a large variety.  The vintage line has been one we liked over the years and the Nicaraguan blends tend to my my personal favorite.  This nice thing about the variety is that there tends to be something for everyone.  The prices vary greatly too offering a stick for any budget.

Rocky Patel Ocean Club – Toro 6.0 X 52

Over the years I have enjoyed many Rocky Patel cigars but I have to admit I have not tried many new blends in some time so this is a review I am looking forward to doing.  This blend is one you can't find except on Holts.com and is at a very reasonable price.  Time to get to the fun part of our process...

Look and Feel:

The Ocean Club has a medium brown shade wrapper and has a smooth paper feel to the touch.  The seams are tight and hard to see and the pack has a fair amount of give.  The shape is a semi box pressed cigar with minimal veins providing a slight barnyard aroma to the wrapper.  The blend includes a Nicaraguan wrapper, Mexican binder, and fillers from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.  The pre-light draw offers a good draw with leather, wood, and salt mixed in for good measure.

Foot Third:

Off the top, the Ocean Club is an earthy cigar, slightly gritty, mixed with black pepper and cayenne pepper.  On occasion you taste a hint of citrus and white pepper.  Quickly the flavors moved to a creamy vanilla and floral notes mixed with white and black pepper.  The flavor then moved to a strong vanilla cream with just a hint of spice.  On the finish you taste the cream move to black pepper and then cayenne pepper.  Very smooth medium bodied cigar with very pleasant flavors and a long finish.

Body Third:

The second third slowly moved to a coffee binding flavor with hints of earth.  The secondary flavors consist of vanilla cream mixed with nutmeg and clove.  Through the nose you get hit with a strong white pepper which is very sharp.  The finish is still long with a mixture of earth, black pepper, and some coffee.  The body moved to a medium full with a well-balanced mixture of flavors.

Head Third:
The last third continued with a coffee flavor with the vanilla moving to a graham cracker note.  The coffee moves to a creamy coffee mixed with sweet spices.  The retrohale becomes smoother as the white pepper became mild and smooth.  The finish is shorter and very clean with a hint of citrus providing a pleasant ending.  The earthy flavor kicks in later in this third losing the complexity that this cigar had for the first two thirds.

Summary:

The Rocky Patel Ocean Club performed very well especially considering it is a budget cigar.  If this cigar was double the price I wouldn't rate it as high but due to the value, this cigar outperforms its price.  Offering flavors of earth, coffee, vanilla, graham cracker, black pepper, white pepper, and cayenne pepper, this cigar will fit many smoker profiles.  Thank you to Holt's for providing this cigar for review.  Check these out in the Rocky Patel Luxury Collection sampler pack on Holt's.com.

Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 – Toro 6.5 X 52

This cigar is an oldie but a goodie.  Over the years there have been times where there have been construction issues but over the last few years these are coming back and performing well.  Matt of Cigar Audit has smoked a lot of these over the years and has always told me he is a fan of the profile.  I have never smoked a Rocky cigar so I can't wait to light this one up!

Look and Feel:

The 1990 has a nice dark brown maduro style wrapper with tight seams.  The wrapper leaf shows minimal veins and has a waxy feel to it.  The aroma has a strong barnyard smell, musk and with a hint of spice.  The pack is fairly firm with a little give which provides a good draw.  The pre-light draw is perfect and provides a sweet dark tobacco flavor with a hint of cocoa.  This cigar presents well which provides just the right amount of temptation.

Foot Third:

The start of the 1990 provides strong leather with cocoa mixed well with black and white pepper.  Throughout this third the pepper flavors transition from white, to black, to cayenne, to bell peppers.  The leather and cocoa moved to a cream flavor and provides a smooth creamy feel.  The white pepper and leather is present through the nose.  The ash is a little flaky but held to about the 1 inch mark.  Towards the end of the first third I started to taste cherry to mix with that cream...who doesn't love cherries and cream?  What can I say, great first third!

Body Third:

The second third started with that cherry note with darker chocolate flavors.  (Maybe even cocoa nibs)  The spice pulled back in this third but the leather came back as a more prominent flavor.  Some rich earth popped in with hints of grass but moved back to the leather by the end of this third.  The body is medium full with a moderate leather finish that lasts for about a minute.  The retrohale will move from all cream, to cream mixed with spices, to black pepper which adds to the complexity.  The burn has been wavy and needed a relight but otherwise it is performing well.

Head Third:
There were a few more burn that required some more touch ups but the flavors remained enjoyable.  The retrohale was powerful at time with strong black pepper and cayenne pepper mixed together.  Dark roast coffee mixes well with dark chocolate adding a nice sweeter blend to this cigar.  The leather remains throughout the cigar as the binding flavor and blends very well with all of the other flavors and spices.

Summary:

I really enjoyed the Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 even with a few burn issues.  It is fair to point out this cigar did not go through our normal acclimation period but regardless the cigar performed well.  The flavors are well defined mixed with leather, cocoa, coffee, black pepper, white pepper, cayenne pepper, and lots of cream.  This medium full cigar offers lots of transitions and is a great buy!  Thanks to Holt's for providing this cigar for review.  These are offered various ways including theRocky Patel Luxury Collection, so click on that link (or any picture) to take advantage of their current deal!
